The roof looks disconcertingly new. And like a single piece of poured concrete. Turns out, it is a single piece of poured concrete. The Romans invented concrete in (from memory) 21 BC. The roof here (built in 125 AD) was the largest concrete construction in the world until the 20th century, and is still the largest unsupported concrete dome in the world. Romans scare me.

At the time, a straight street that you could see more than 10 meters down was somewhat of a novelty in Rome.

what was odd was the number of people who kept accosting us and wanting to swap ‘take a photo of us’ events. Also, much more digital-savvy now - people would squint at tiny photos, request do-overs, etc.

It’s famous. There’s some famous film (that I haven’t seen, as it features neither robots, space, or explosions) that has a scene in it.

This building was impressive, in that it was (a) Large, and (b) Still there (there are lots of truly massive and no-longer-there buildings in Rome). But there was also very little shade around it. And it was Hot. So we spent most of the time leaping ninja-like from shadow to shadow.

Or possibly not. But it was weird how many of these ‘three pillars and something on top’ groupings had survived, and not, say, groups of 4 or 2.

Happened on the day after we arrived. 10k, in 31˚c heat? fortunately, it happened at something like 9pm, by which time it was almost bearable out. But then, I’d come from London, where it had rained all August.

This was in the hotel. Slightly overdone, but on the other hand there was no lift and we were on the 4th (european numbering) floor. So it was nice to have something to look at when you had to stop and wheeze for a bit on the way up.
